After many months of discussion and prayer, Blount County Habitat for Humanity was officially incorporated in 1992. The first house built was sponsored by First Baptist Church of Maryville. Most of our homes are built through covenant partnerships with local churches, businesses and employee groups. Nineteen homes were built around Blount County from 1992 through 1997. In March1996, President Clinton signed legislation directing the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.) to provide funds to nonprofit organizations for purchasing land and providing infrastructure for the construction of affordable housing. HABITAT received $25 million of this funding for use by U. S. Habitat affiliates. This program is called S.H.O.P. (Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program) and will result in the construction of 2,500 housing units by the year 2000. In 1997, Blount County HFH was the first HFH affiliate nationwide to receive a S.H.O.P. Grant. The money was used to develop 26 home sites in Maryville's Clover Hill Sub-Division. The 1998 GMWP house was the 10th house built in this sub-division; the sub-division will be completed by November 2000. The BCHFH staff is composed of Kay Covington, our Executive Director, Chris Lance, our Family Services Coordinator and Vista volunteer and Bette Jean Berry, our Volunteer Coordinator (Sister Bette Jean is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star).
