Framing of the 1999 GMWP house began on Saturday June 19, 1999. Brethren from both local and out of area Lodges gathered at the work site early in the morning to begin a day of fellowship as operative builders.

Blount County CrewThe first GMWP was built in partnership with Blount County HFH during the summer of 1998. 4 brethren, who were actively involved with the building of that house traveled 6 hours west to Lexington to help frame the 1999 GMWP house. Shown in the photo at right are (from left to right), Brother Melvin Giles (Past Master and Treasurer of Rockford Lodge #469, Brother Larry Price, (Past Master and Secretary of Rockford Lodge #469, Blount County co-chairman and co-founder of the Blount Masonic Council), Brother David Williamson (Worshipful Master of Rockford Lodge #469) and Brother George Johnston, also a member of Rockford Lodge #469.

Al Chymia CrewAl Chymia Shrine Temple (Memphis) sent a bus load of workers. Shown in the photo at left (from right to left) are Illustrious SIr Potentate Bill Conn (wearing blue suspenders), Noble Bill Goss, Chief Rabban Brother Roy Good and several other Shriners. Brother Good cooked an hearty lunch for the workers.

The work day went very well. Brethren are shown in the photo below setting wooden I-beams and installing the sub-floor.

I-Beams

By the end of the day, the exterior walls, and some of the interior walls were built. The next two weeks brought very hot days and considerable rain; despite these factors, work continued. During the next week, Brothers Bill Whisel, Paul Wilson and James Hubbell completed the interior walls. Work days were held on June 26, July 3 and July 10. Roof trusses and decking were installed and shingling was begun.

Framed HouseThe house is shown in the photo at left at the end of the July 10 work day; as that time, 624 total work hours had been donated to this project, including 129 hours donated by non-Masons!

Once the house was in the dry, various sub-contractors began interior work. Brother Randal Lomax (W.M. Constantine Lodge #64) rough wired the house; Brother Lomax also donated electrical supplies for the job. Brother Jimmy Turner and his son Brother Eric (both members of St. John's Lodge #332) did the rough plumbing. On July 30, Brother Bill Presslar (ABC Insulation) insulated the house. He was able to obtain a partial donation for the materials, and donated the installation labor. Sheet rock was installed, walls painted, fixtures installed.

Finally, everything was completed and the house was dedicated on Sunday September 12, 1999.
