Framing The House--9/11/99

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY is first and foremost an ecumenical Christian Ministry. HABITAT designates the 3rd Sunday in September each year as a DAY OF PRAYER AND ACTION. The week proceeding this day is designated as BUILDING ON FAITH WEEK. During 1999's BOF week, HFH dedicated it's 80,000th house world wide since 1976. During BOF week in 2000, (which will also be the week of the 2000 JIMMY CARTER WORK PROJECT), Obion HFH competed and dedicated the 100,000th house worldwide!

The spirit of BUILDING ON FAITH was very evident and present in Troy Tennessee on Saturday September 11, 1999 . The day was a beautiful late Summer day--partly cloudy and with a comfortable working temperature. The sign shown in the photo at right greeted over 100 volunteers who began gathering at the work site by 6:30 A.M.

Ben The building lot had been donated by Brother Ben Norrid (see photo at left), a member of Western Sun Lodge #88 in Troy. Brother Ben was raised as a Master Mason in November 1998. The lot is located on property he owns, and where his own home is located--literally in his front yard.

The day began with a devotional service conducted by the Pastor of one of the 3 1st Wall sponsor Churches, following which, the Obion Central High School band played our National Anthem.

As shown in the photo at right, by 7:15 A.M., the first wall had been raised!

Angie and Betty

20 members of the Bartlett DeMolay Chapter, accompanied by Chapter Dad, Brother Ken Lee, demolays at work and several Moms arrived at the building site to help. Chapter Master Counselor, Ryan Lee (son of Brother Ken--he was installed last month) has adopted HABITAT FOR HUMANITY as a service project for his term of office, and organized the trip from Memphis to Troy. The Demolay youth, marked and transported OSB board and other building materials, and assisted with site clean-up, and food preparation. They are shown in the photo at right at work. They plan to come back for future work days to help paint and landscape.

Several Member of Western Sun Lodge #88 and other local Masonic Lodges also worked as operative builders. Shown in the photo at right are (from Right to Left), Brother Jim Hurt, Brother Jimmy Hart (who is also the Mayor of Troy) Brother Kent, Western Sun Lodge Chaplain Brother Ralph Weatley, Worshipful Master Frank Long and Treasurer and Past Master Brother Polk Glover.

Petition Grand Master John Vincent also stopped by and lent a hand. Shown in the photo at left are (from Right to Left), District 3 Chairman and Organ Donor Awareness Task Force Chairman Brother Don Jones, Grand Master Vincent, Brother Polk Glover, Mr. William Ryder and Brother Jimmy Hart. Mr. Ryder asked for a petition for the 3 degrees, and is shown in the photo at right filling it out.

Noon A hearty lunch was served under a tent at the work site. Brother Norrid obtained donations of food and drinks from the Union City Wal-Mart Store. The status of the house is shown in the photo at left and was taken just as lunch was starting to be served.

By late afternoon, the roof had been shingled and the windows installed. Obion County HFH President Jimmy Smith was very pleased with the community's support and how much was accomplished in one day. In addition to this being Obion HFH's first house built in the Troy Community, this is the first year that Obion HFH built two houses. Jimmy and the board are excited about Obion HFH's growth and ability to help more of Obion County's 'God's people in need.'

Progress Report--9/18/99

Brothers,
It has been another great day for the Habitat for Humanity in Obion County. To start with, a good bit had been done during the week; electrical and heat & air roughed in and inspected, along with some dirt work in the yard.

Saturday (September 18) morning started out very cool, temp. near 50--great weather. Another large group showed up to work. The main project for the day was siding. Over three quarters of the siding was put up before materials ran out.

Side projects that turned into major accomplishment was insulation and dry wall, all of which was completed except what had to be left open for the plumber. Also both outside doors and the last window were installed. We are ahead of schedule!!!

The remaining schedule is as follows:
This coming week the plumber should get to work and some dry wall taping and mudding should be done.

Sept. 25 and Oct. 2 Finish dry wall work and siding, start on interior trim with primer coat of paint.

Oct. 9 and 16 Lay vinyl, prime walls and 1st coat of paint, hang interior doors and trim cut.

Oct. 23 and 30 Final coat of paint and install cabinets.

Other projects that will be worked on between now and Oct. 30, Electrical, plumbing, heating & air finished and inspected. Driveway and sidewalks formed and poured. And landscaping and carpet laid.

It's amazing how much is getting done so quickly. Remember we are ahead of schedule so the above is subject to change. If you can come by and at least take a look. The recipient of this house, Angie McClure, is very nice and hard working. I believe she is really deserving of this house. Please pass this information along. I believe we are doing a great deed here.
