2002 GMWP Pin

The 2002 Grand Master's Work Project house will be built in partnership with Tipton County Habitat for Humanity. Brother Bill Wallace, chairman of the VISION 2013 School Literacy Program is serving on the Board of Directors of this affiliate, and will be serving as 2002 GMWP coordinator. Tipton County HFH, an affiliate of HABITAT FOR HUMANITY International, is a Tennessee non-profit [501(c)(3)] corporation, and donations are genrally tax deductible--please check with an appropriate tax advisor. Tipton County HFH was founded in 1989 and as of October 2000, has completed 15 houses--2 additional houses are currently under construction. The house will be located at 917 South Maple Street in Covington. The site (see photo at left) had 3 old homes on it, and was donated to the affiliate. The homes were demolished in March 2002--ultimately 3 new HABITAT homes will be built.

GROUND BREAKING--APRIL 6, 2002

Groundbreaking--Grand Master Ground breaking for the 2002 GMWP was held on Saturday April 6, 2002. Shown in the photo at right are (from left to right) Grand Master Joe Harrison, Tipton County HFH President Bob Whitworth and Tipton County HFH Board Member (and 2002 GMWP director) Brother Bill Wallace.

Members of the Raleigh DeMolay Chapter, along with their Dad advisors will help construct this house. This Chapter was previously involved with the 1999 GMWP in Obion County. Chapter members are shown in the photo at left. Groundbreaking--DeMolay Chapter Master Councilor, Gary Morrison, is shown shaking hands with Grand Master Joe Harrison, pledging the support of the Chapter in the upcoming construction. The boxes below the sign contain nails donated by ITW Pasload, which has a factory in Covington; Pasload has also doanted nail guns to Tipton County HFH.

The current State DeMolay Master Councilor, Mr. Nathan Rogers, has adopted HABITAT FOR HUMANITY as a community service project for his year. He, along with members of the Kingsport DeMolay Chapter, helped frame a 2001 GMWP house built in July 2001 in partnership with Jefferson County HFH.

The house will be a 4 bedroom, handicapped accessable home. John and Angela Smith have 3 children, Willie, Catheryn and Takeada. Angela's mother Virginia (who is wheelchair bound) will also occupy the home. All HABITAT homeowners are required to work 500 hours of "sweat equity"--work done helping build their own home and those of other HFH homeowners. The Smiths have already worked considreable hours and are ready to start building their own home.
