About Roane County Habitat for Humanity | Roane County HFH Main Page 1391 James Ferry Road Kingston, TN 37763 (865) 376-5770 |
| Roane County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI), a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. Habitat works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need, Habitat's partner families, at no profit and with no interest charged. Partner families invest hundreds of hours of their own labor -- sweat equity -- into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses. | |||
| Roane HFH is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors and operates by several committees. Our board meeting is
held on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 P.M. eastern time. In addition to
building volunteers, we have many opportunities for those willing to serve on our
committees and assist with aspects of affiliate operation. Founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller along with his wife Linda, and headquartered in Americus, Ga, HFHI's work in the United States is accomplished by affiliates. Habitat affiliates are independent, nonprofit [501(c)(3)] organizations that are organized by local citizens and operate with local s and local volunteers. There are more than 1,800 U.S. affiliates spread among all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers provide most of the labor, and faithful individual and corporate donors provide the money and materials to build Habitat houses. |

| Habitat's
mission is to eliminate poverty housing from the earth. Habitat has taken its vision of a
world with no more shacks to 53 nations. Today, Habitat for Humanity has built more than
200,000 houses, sheltering more than 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities
worldwide. Roane County Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1991 to meet the needs of Roane County's residents who cannot qualify for conventional house financing, and who are willing to partner with Habitat to achieve the goal of home ownership. To date, Roane County HFH has completed 29 houses providing housing for over 125 individuals who previously were living in substandard housing. Roane County HFH is a 501(c)3 corporation. Donations of money and/or materials are generally tax deductible. Please check with your tax advisor. A HABITAT house places undeveloped property on the tax rolls for an average appraisal of $70,000. During our short existence, the Roane County Property Tax base has been increased by over 2 million dollars, due to cash donations, volunteer efforts and homeowner cooperation. Roane County HFH is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Houses are built mostly by volunteers. Annual reviews by HFHI have praised Roane County HFH for above average quality of construction, and for the large number of houses completed in relationship to county demographics.
