BACKGROUND
Perhaps the most important aspect of Masonic Renewal is getting Masons and Lodges involved in translating the Tenets of our Fraternity into a tangible positive impact in the communities through service and relief programs and efforts. Through such programs, the interest of the uninitiated in Masonry is increased and our obligations to serve humanity are met. For most charities, contributions of monetary or gift value are acknowledged often with a pin or certificate. However, the most precious resources that a Mason has, his time and effort, sometimes go unrecognized or unrewarded. The hours and efforts that individual Masons devote to voluntary service are the essence of this program for they demonstrate to the world, by actions, what our beliefs and tenets really are.
Several Lodges have adopted good programs of service, but these efforts are often carried out by a small fraction of it's members. Though many of our Brethren are involved in community service out of a sheer desire to do what is right, there is not structured incentive program to entice others to contribute their time and energies over the long term.
The VOLUNTARY SERVICE AWARD PROGRAM approved by the Vision 2013 Committee seeks to address this situation by providing the Subordinate Lodge a means to recognize and motivate it's members to get more involved in the lodge programs that each Lodge adopts for itself.
Brother Bob Harriman was appointed as the first chairman of the VSA program and served from 1999 to 2006. In April 2006, Brother Daniel Mata of Jamestown Lodge #281 was appointed the new chairman.
